Jen Jurek got me— a socially anxious, shy pile of awkward— to play David Attenborough falling in love with a holographic clam in front of 60+ people. That is to say, she is pure magic. Astoria Women’s Improv was such a wonderful experience, and thanks to Jen’s commitment to creating a safe, happy space, I’ve met some incredible women who are now dear friends. You should do this, random woman on the internet reading this. You won’t regret it.

“My experience with Astoria Women’s Improv can be summed up in two words, plus a hyphen: life-changing.

One Saturday morning last summer, I saw a flyer in a pharmacy window advertising Astoria Women’s Improv, and my first thought was, “Huh?” I almost didn’t sign up, but I believe that when I did, it was an act of destiny fulfilled. After living in Astoria for five years, I’ve finally found my home.

Astoria Women’s Improv has been the perfect combination of therapy and a much-needed creative outlet. For two hours every Monday, I can leave the world behind and laugh (as well as feel my feelings) with a hilarious community of women.

If you’re looking to fill the void in your soul, do it with improv, and AWI specifically (because other improv classes may make you feel inadequate as a performer, as they have for me).

In the words of the brilliant Jen Jurek, “Improv is sh*tting all over the place,” and what better environment to create in than one where you’re encouraged to f*** it all up.

TL;DR — Say “yes, and...” and sign up already.”

I found Jen’s sentiments to be warm and inviting so I dig what is there.

This class is a beautiful way to push boundaries, get weird, grow, and share laughs with a solid group of women in a non-competitive and fun environment.

Too much fun to be legal but thank gosh it is.

The “all women” part heightens the experience because it gives me something to look forward to during the week like i am going to a slumber party and during class, anything can be said and we don’t have to explain and defend our nonsense because we just understand us! We have fun while learning to let go in class.
