The TRUTH about IMPROV! (How to engage students by forever connecting them)
For the past 3 years, Jen Jurek has been working with the benefits of improv to change communities as well as it’s basic function in mental health. Improv is a call to reconnect, to ourselves and one another. Research shows how certain creative initiatives provide the right environment to pave new neural pathways in the brain which has the power to absolutely be a departure from apathy. This session will address the concern of student retention through provocative questions, games and simple “yes and” functions. These games are carefully chosen for advisors to be able to suss out meaningful moments where personal interactions become the safety net for students on the fence. A considered student, in this light, will better be able to see themselves as valuable part of the fabric of an institution when they are invited, by you, the leaders, to do so. In short, student retention is a wise (wo)man’s gain, so say yes to being upstanding and authentic, say yes to the truth of humor. Say YES to the benefits of improv.

The ‘Improvised’ Path Forward
In a world where having an agenda is encouraged, the road we take in life, can easily throw us on a detour. So how do we combat the disappointment of things not appearing as we had hoped? Research shows that new neural pathways are forged when trying something new, so…. improv! Consider examining the ‘open heart’ policy of taking what is in front of you as the thing to work with. Also, while we’re at it, why not break free of old habits through use of this creative outlet? For the record, creative discovery has been proven to positively affect moods, thoughts, attitudes and actions. This session will deal with how saying YES (and building on it) can help us change our minds, make decisions and form relationships with our playful sides. So! Create an ‘improv plan’ for your upcoming adventure! Ready….set….HILARITY (AND CLARITY).
